Don’t Rely on a Lawyer for Therapy

Don’t Rely on a Lawyer for Therapy

The former billionaire, Scot Young, fell four stories to his death following a lengthy divorce battle; one of the many reports can be found here.  While it has yet to be determined whether this tragedy was a suicide, it serves as a reminder of the importance of mental health care before, during and after a divorce.

We encourage all of our clients to seek counseling or therapy if they are not already doing so. Our advice? Don’t rely on a lawyer for your therapy, and don’t rely on a therapist for your legal advice. A good matrimonial attorney will handle the emotional matters of this field with an appropriate amount of feeling and sensitivity. However, the sympathetic ear of an attorney is not a substitute for a mental health care professional.
